Gary Smith is president and co-owner of Smith Massman Landscape & Design Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His main duty is managing the daily business. He also likes being involved in the companies Landscape Design & Sales Department.
Gary moved to Cedar Rapids to attend Kirkwood Community College in 1976. He graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Landscape, Nursery & Garden Center in 1978. In 1980 Gary was recognized by the state of Iowa as an Iowa Certified Nurseryman. After graduating from Kirkwood he worked for Dwight Hughes Nursery & Fleming Landscape & Irrigation before starting Smith Massman with co-owner Dan Massman in 1996.
Gary enjoys being involved with a company that provides both creative and beautiful landscapes. He finds it most rewarding being involved in projects that Smith Massman is able to design and build using the highest standard of landscape materials including our 15 acre nursery of trees and shrubs. Whether it's creating landscapes for new homes and businesses, or designing outdoor patio spaces with water features, the most rewarding thing is the smile on a customer's face when they see the new project for the first time.
Gary likes spending time with his wife Teresa and their children Amanda, Nathan & Claire. He is involved at St. Matthew Parish, where he has been a member for the past 26 years. Some of his hobbies include jogging, playing guitar and listening to music, reading, bird watching with Teresa and trying to make it out onto the golf course with friends, which is most difficult with his busy schedule. He has been involved with the Kirkwood Advisory Committee for a number of years since graduation.
